Chapter 11 – The Long Winter

The next morning came around fast. The snow was falling harder than before. Her papa stood in the doorway, surveying the sky.

“What is it, Papa?” Timothy sleepily questioned.

“I don’t like the way the sky looks this mornin’.” He then turned and looked at the two of them.

Timothy looked at him, not knowing what to say or expect. Abigail set the plate of food on the table and waited for her papa to explain.

“You two just be sure to help Mrs. Thompson keep an eye on the sky and the snowfall.”

The children nodded to let their papa know they understood. After they ate breakfast, they all loaded up in the wagon and headed out to the Thompsons’ house.

‘I hope I at least get to see Jacob before they leave,’ Abigail wished as she rode in the seat beside her papa. As they arrived, Mr. Thompson and Jacob were finishing hitching up the wagon.

“We thought we’d all ride together and leave one wagon for the family.” Edward called out as her papa pulled the wagon up close to the barn.

“Y’all hurry on up and get in here before you get snowed out!” Sandra jokingly yelled from the house door.

Abigail and Timothy smiled at each other and headed to the house. Jacob walked back towards the house alongside them. As they walked, Jacob turned his head slightly toward Abigail to say something to her.

Before he could get a word out, she slightly turned her head toward him and whispered, “I’m sorry. I should’ve listened to you.”

“It’s okay. I understand.” He smiled and whispered back. They both smiled and went inside.

Jacob grabbed their lunches, kissed his ma goodbye, and headed out the door. Before he went completely out of sight, he turned back where he thought no one could see him except Abigail and mouthed the words ‘Goodbye’. Abigail just smiled and turned red.

The men and Jacob rode off to work. Timothy and the twins ran off to play in their room. Abigail, still with a red face, looked at Sandra to see what she needed to help her with. Sandra just smiled and shook her head, which made Abigail turn even redder.

Abigail followed Sandra around all day, talking and learning how to do many things. Mrs. Thompson made learning so easy. Abigail didn’t even realize she was learning anything until she sat and reflected on what she had done that day.

By the end of the day, the snow began falling harder. It was piling up along the ground. The boys played a bit in it, but complained that it was too cold. Charles played by himself most of the day. He seemed to be happy to be by himself for a while, like a break from his brothers. As the men arrived home, the snow was coming down extremely hard. Edward wanted them to stay the night and see if the snow lightened up in the morning.

However, her papa insisted they try to make it home. He didn’t want to impose on them any more than they already had.
